Hi Kim, tell us, how did your career begin in hospitality?

I started out as a Silver Service Waitress at the Grosvenor House Hotel. I then got a job as an Assistant Banqueting Manager and after that, became a Meetings and Events Manager. I’m now leading the Guest Experience team here at The Athenaeum and I love it – every day is different.

What is your favourite thing about being Guest Experience Manager?

The most enjoyable part of my job is when guests call to see me, and thank me for my help. I really love to see smiles and happy faces all round, and knowing that my team and I have contributed to their positive experience is a wonderful feeling.

What attracted you to working at The Athenaeum?

For me it was the idea of working in a smaller, family-run hotel – a complete contrast to what I was used to in previous jobs. The team here are great – we’re like family.

What does a typical day look like for you at work?

It varies day-to-day so I could be checking guests in and out, dealing with luggage and taxis, or making restaurant bookings. I could also be meeting VIP guests and organising personalised amenities to be placed in rooms.

What advice would you give to someone who wants a career in hospitality management?

If you’re looking for a career that will have you experiencing something different each day, then the hospitality industry is for you. There’s never a dull moment.

Where do you see yourself in your career in five years’ time?

I have several thoughts on where I might like to be but I’ve not settled on anything yet.

Describe your job in three words.

Personable, dynamic, engaging.
